TV Review: The Cuphead Show

The Cuphead Show is a new cartoon on Netflix. It is based on the video game Cuphead. Cuphead, the game, is great. It is challenging and visually amazing. It is like controlling a classic cartoon from the mid-twentieth century. It also features mature themes such as gambling, alcohol, and tobacco use.

Because of the mature themes of the game, I was surprised to learn that Cuphead would be made into a cartoon. My first question was if the cartoon would be targeted at adults or children. The answer is that it is a children’s cartoon. I think that was a good call.

Recently, my children and I have started watching the first season. We also enjoy classic cartoons such as Chip & Dale, Popeye, Betty Boop, and Superman. While those cartoons are great, they were made a long time ago. This means that the audio and aspect ratio of the cartoons is not suited for today’s televisions.

The Cuphead Show features this classic aesthetic with modern audio, and beautiful, clear images. The themes are also similar to the classic cartoons, being heavy on slapstick.

The main characters are Cuphead, and Mugman, two friends who live together with their guardian Elder Kettle. The two friends fight like brothers, and make all kinds of mischief - that is basically as deep as the stories go.

Some fans of the game will likely be disappointed at the tame themes of the show, but I think it makes sense. The video game is really difficult, so difficult that most children will be unable to clear it. At the same time, the character design is really attractive to children. Now that there is a cartoon with many of the same characters, there is a version of Cuphead that children can enjoy without relying on their parents for help.
